Brecknock

Brecknock was a 600-acre tract of land conveyed to Alexander Humphreys in 1680. To put this into perspective, there are 460 acres in a square mile. In 1761, Thomas Hanson bought the tract and built “Hanson’s Grist Mill.” At his death, it was inherited by Hanson’s son-in-law, Samuel Howell. Later, 436 of the original 600 acres were sold to Warner Mifflin, who then sold the land to Thomas Edmondson, John Edmondson, and to his own brother Daniel Mifflin. The remaining 86 acres and the mansion house remained in the family until Elizabeth Howell Goggin gave the manor house and 86 acres to Kent County to be used as a park.
