Whatcoat Methodist Cemetery
The Whatcoat Cemetery is located on the south side of South Main St. This site was the location of the first Methodist Church that was built in 1795. In 1813, an additional one-half acre was purchased for the purpose of a burial ground. In 1857 the church was removed from the grounds when a new church was built on Commerce St., now Camden Wyoming Ave.
The cemetery continued to be used as a burial ground until 1887. Very few burials took place after 1872 when Odd Fellows Cemetery opened. The earliest known burial was Sarah Cooper, who died in 1795, and the last burial was Sallie Quillen, who died in 1887, after which it was abandoned and became overgrown. The cemetery was cleaned up and restored in 1976 and 1986. Additional restoration was done in 2023 and 2024, including removing trees and brush and repairing tombstones.
