Kimmey-Ridgely House

The Kimmey-Ridgely House at 215 E Camden-Wyoming Avenue was built by Charles Kimmey, a Dover merchant, in 1813. The House was acquired by the Ridgely Family in 1885, and ever since it has been their family home. The House is a five-bay, two-and-one-half story brick dwelling house. A cedar addition including a modern kitchen with an attached garage and formal Williamsburg style garden was added in 1980. The southern facade of this late Georgian brick structure is laid in Flemish bond, complemented by a boxed cornice and contemporary pedimented dormers. The interior arrangement of this single-pile edifice is a center hall plan, with an attached rear kitchen wing. The original kitchen wing, containing a large original cooking fireplace with crane, is constructed in a three-course common bond pattern and features an exterior end chimney. Members of the Ridgely Family who have resided in the House include Kent County Prothonotary and State Senator Daniel Mifflin Ridgely (1855-1932), State Senator, Town of Camden Councilman and Justice of the Peace Charles duPont Ridgely (1878-1966), Dover lawyer and Deputy Attorney General Henry Johnson Ridgely (1913-1990), Delaware Supreme Court Justice Henry duPont Ridgely (1949-), and Delaware architect and Camden Town Councilman Daniel Shepard Ridgely (1976-).
